Hawa Mahal in Rajasthan

The Hawa Mahal is perhaps the most famous of the palaces of Rajasthan. This unusual structure is a landmark of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. The Hawa Mahal, though pretty in appearance, does not have the reassuring solidity that is the hallmark of old buildings. Its walls are less than one foot thick, though the structure itself appears majestic thanks to its height. The Hawa Mahal is part of the giant City Palace complex. This palace once housed the women of the kings household.

The architecture is unusual, because of the presence of hundreds of (950, to be precise) latticed windows. While latticed windows were a common occurrence in old Rajasthani palaces and havelis, the presence of so many windows in a single structure is unique.

The windows, for the women, were literally their windows to the world. Barred from moving out of the confines of the palace, not allowed to mingle with the common people, perhaps these unfortunate ladies demanded the right to broaden their horizons and look on sights and sounds denied to them.

Whatever the case, they finally got a place from where they could look on at the world outside, without compromising the “honor” of their lord and master.

The Hawa Mahal was designed by Lal Chand, a devotee of Lord Krishna. As a dedication to his favorite deity, Lal Chand made the palace in the shape of Lord Krishna’s regal crown. The interiors are not very lavish, surprising considering that this palace was meant to house the women of the royal household. Perhaps the women in those times were not interested in interior décor; or perhaps after getting permission to look out on the world outside, they were too glad to ask for anything else! The only concession for the women is the sets of pavilions leading to the upper floors, which were used for carrying procession of palanquins of the ladies.

You can also visit the tiny museum inside the palace, displaying trinkets, baubles, and other knickknacks that were once dear to the ladies who lived here. The Hawa Mahal offers a glimpse into the lives of the most invisible folks of old Rajasthan – the women.
